Bowie’s music is honest and true, powerful and energetic, quirky and absurd, and always surprising. The moment you think you know him and what he’s doing, he turns and comes up with something completely unexpected. This is what we want to convey to our audience with ‘Alpaca Bowie’.

‘Alpaca Bowie’ is a concert-performance by and with Alpaca Ensemble, with newly composed music inspired by David Bowie’s 1972 concept album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’. The music is written by composers Alwynne Pritchard, Ole Henrik Moe, Jon Øivind Ness, and Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje. Bowie’s music and art is of great value and significance for the music of our whole generation, regardless of genre. The ensemble and the four composers all regard Bowie, at different stages and in different ways, as an important source of inspiration.

This project is not about classical musicians playing ‘pop-music’. ‘Alpaca Bowie’ is contemporary classical composers and performers drawing inspiration from great music that they love and exploring it within their own tradition and setting, thereby at the same time challenging said traditions and customs of contemporary classical music.
